My daughter was diagnosed of having Vesicouteral Reflux grade 4-5 since she was 5 months old. She was on prophylaxis. The doctor recommended surgery only after she turns 1 year in the event it will not improve or correct itself. She just had a VCUG last week and the doctor suggests very strongly surgical intervention. She is now one year and two months old and we are preparing her for the surgery end of February. We woulke to know if this procedure is not a delicate one. By the way, our Doctor is a pediatric urologist here in the philippines. Please give us advice. Rodrigo R. Gandionco, Jr. oding@cebu.pworld.net.ph I am a 40 year old businessman from the Philippines.

Do you have any further information that could help me? I'm seeing a pediatric urologist, but to get a second opinion, my choices are very limited. My daughter is now 5. She was diagnosed with grade 2 reflux 15 months ago. She has been on antibiotics since then. The condition has not changed. She has had 2 break-through infections following the VCUGs. Her urologist is suggesting surgery. I'm looking for specific info@ion regarding the probability of her growing out of this without surgery. She also had trouble controlling her bladder. Are there studies that show the percentage of children that have this same problem and the surgery corrects it? My doctor tells me it 'may' correct it, but he couldn't give me the percentage of cases that it does. Thank you. Karen Rodgers e-mail rodg4sked@aol.com

My daughter was diognosed with vesicoureteral reflux at the age of 8 months. She has been on antibiotics since then. I was given the option of keeping her on the meds or surgery. My husband and I have waited qnd waited and the reflux is not going away. We spoke to her urologist and we have decided to go with the surgery, could i please have any info on the surgery that would be recomened for her reflux. I was told that it wacomplex procedure but that it had a 95% turn out rate.My doctor said that they would go in and make a incision in her bladder and reroute her tubes through a muscle, but I would like more details on the procedure. slimmer37@hamilton.net

MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN DX WITH THIS TO. SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH THE SURGERY AND IS STILL ON THE ANTIBODIC FOR THE INFECTIONS. SHE HAS HAD 3 OF THE VCUG TESTS. SHE HAS HAD SURGERY IN FEBRUARY OF 1998. THE SURGERY DID CORRECT ONE OF THE REFLUX SIDES, BUT NOT THE WORST. SHE HAS TO GO BACK IN FOR ANOTHER SURGERY. THIS TIME SHE WILL HAVE A SMALLER SURGERY DONE. IT WILL BE AN OUT-PATIENT SURGERY. I DON'T HAVE A E-MAIL ADDRESS RINOW. SHE HAD THE SURGERY AND BOUNCED BACK VERY FAST.

Our 9 month old daughter was diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux one month ago, after three urinary tract infections, the first of which she probably had her whole life. Her reflux is grade 4+. Anyway, we are seeing a very prominent Doctor at the University of California Los Angeles. His persuasion is that surgery would be most appropriate for her given the high degree of reflux. If she can remain uninfected in the ne1ear, a Nuclear cystogram should be accomplished at that time. If she develops a breakthrough infection, we would complete the surgery as soon as possible. We are interested in hearing the fine details of other children in the same position. I have gathered some information on vesicureteral reflux and ureteral reimplantation, but not as much as I'd like. Wefald1@AOL.com

My son will be 3 in November and was diagnosed with the reflux before birth. He's been on antibiotics all this time and had surgery a year ago, which was unsuccessful. We just scheduled another surgery for Dec 17, 1998. What if this doesn't work either? Robicare@aol.com

My granddaughter age 4 was diagnosed prior to birth via ultrasound with ectopic ureterocele. She was operated on at age 1. Since then she has had numerous bladder/kidney infections. She has not been on antibiotics other than during these periods of illness. What suggestion would you have? Should we consider another operation? Is there a specialist that you could recommend, any in Minnesota, Mayo Clinic?Respond to H L Murthamail address HLM10@amdahl.com

My 2 year old daughter was diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux, grade 2 (right side) and grade 4 (left side) at 18 months. She was on prophilaxis for over a year, and then had surgery in Sept '98 (age 2 1/2). She recently began having infections again. She is scheduled for a VCUG in Dec '98. What are the choices if the first surgery doesn't work? MARCBERT@AOL.COM

My name is Shari, hwpere@ix.netcom.com. My 8 yr. old daughter was born with reflux and diagnosed at 6 weeks, after 2 infections. She was placed on antibiotics and had a break-through infection at 1 1/2 yrs. old and her medicine was changed. At 2 yrs. old, the urologist deemed her "cured". At the age of 6 she had a severe kidney infection and diagnosed with relfux on both sides, both grade 5. We have been treating her withibiotics until her organs are mature, and then the Dr. suggests surgery. She has since broken out with a serious rash, somewhat like ringworms, but the Dr. can't say exactly what it is. I'm concerned the antibiotics are breaking down her immune system to a degree. She is also having considerable leaking from the bladder throughout the day and night and may need to wear a feminine pad. I'm concerned with her progression, and feel lthe surgery may put an end to all of this. But, I don't want to subject her to surgery if that won't correct the problem.

My 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with reflux age 3 months of age. We have not gotten a consistent result on any of the VCUG's we have gotten done in the past 3 years. Each test has shown reflux on a different side at a different grade. She has remained infection free on Bactrim. Is there anyone out there who has had this experience. Also extremely frustrated with toileting her. She does well, and then has constant dents? Anyone with the same experience, please e-mail ziels@worldnet.att.net

My daughter was diagnosed with kidney reflux at age 4 months. Her antibiotics failed and she spent 5 days in the hospital with fevers up to 105. Her surgery is scheduled in September 2000. If anybody can give me any info about the actual surgery it would help. She is only 8 months now but her doctors suggests we do the surgery. She's at levels 4 and 1. BLND2563@aol.com

My 3-yr. old daughter has been diagnosed with grade 3 on rt. side & grade 3-4 on left side. She has been on the preventative antibiotic, Septra for 1 yr. & has not had any breakthrough infections. She had a VCUG & sonogram & we were told the reflux was the same, but the size of the left kidney was smaller than it was last year. The dr. informed us it could have been due to how the sonogram was taken.,different technician..etc.., or it could be due to renal scarring. How accurate is the sonogram for accessing kidney growth & size? Would I have known if she had a breakthrough infection that might have caused the scarring. Any time she had a small fever, we went to the dr. for urine tests & cultures & came out clear. We are trying to make a decision about reimplant surgery & we are basing it on this info. Also, we have an older (6yr.)old daughter that "outgrew" grade 2-3 reflux. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you. Janet Bell janetteperabell@hotmail.com

My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed with Grade 4-5 reflux in May 1999 and had surgery to correct at the Mayo Clinic in Dec. 2001. She is doing GREAT! Would be happy to answer questions about our experience. Write to me at jojo_57108@yahoo.com

I was dx at the age of 30 with v. reflux grade 4-5 on both sides and did have the surgergy done. Because it wasn't caught as a child I now have scarring and 25% and 75% workable kidneys - so between the 2 I have 1. I have not had an infection since surgery, but now have to worry about the scarring that was done and was told that one kidney may eventually "die" and may have to be removed. I would recommend having the surgery done for the high grade. Email: CaryBear_65@yahoo.com
