dowisnet@dmci.net I found this article very interesting, being that my spouse was recently given a tentative diagnosis of Nodular Hyperplasia of the liver He has had a hepatobiliary scan, a liver flow scan, a liver spleen scan, a ct scan of the abdomen, and an abdominal MRI. We are currently waiting to go to his dr. about a biopsy to prove the diagnosis. He has a large lesion on the r upper lobe of the liver, which mekes 6cm by 6.5cm via MRI. I take great interest in this due to the fact that I am also a Registered Nurse, and we are trying to distinguish between liver ca, hemangioma, and hyperplasia.

I currently have Focal Nodular Hyperplasia, I had a partial surgery that entailed excision of the right lobe of my liver and cautery of an additional hemangioma and cysts. I still have a 4.5 cm FNH lesion that is inoperable due to the anatomic location within the hepatic veins. I went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,MN and had Dr. David Nagorney as my surgeon. He is a leader in liver operations and has published many articlej hepatic lesions and most importantly FNH. I have done extensive research on liver adenomas and would like to offer any info to you or your husband that could be helpful. PSB1039@aol.com

novamed@ozemail.com.au I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH FOCAL NODULAR HYPOPLASIA. MY TUMOR IS QUITE LARGE (9.5CM X 8.5CM X 5CM). MY SPECIALIST HAS DECIDED NOT TO OPERATE AND I AM CONCERNED DUE TO THE SIZE AND THE ILL HEALTH I HAVE EXPERIANCED IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE ANYONE COULD OFFER EITHER MEDICALLY OR THROUGH ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE. THANK YOU.

72753.2552@compuserve.com Hi my name is Julie and I recently had a tumor removed from my liver that turned out to be FNH. I went in for a biopsy and left with a very large insicion and a piece of my liver missing. The tumor was bleeding and had to be removed. I know little about FNH, and would love to chat with someone who knows something about it.

tjhmurphy@earthlink.net I'm jen, 30 yo WF who was dx'ed during pregn ancy. Also an RN. Frustrated with finding info on cause, treatment, prognosis. MD at Vanderbilt has little input (except "don't worry"). Being F/U every 6 months. Would like to hear any experiences/outcomes. MD thinks no surg nec. now. Worrying now because tenderness seems to have returned. Who is leading in US in research?

32 year old female, dx'd and had hepatic resection. Hemangioma on right lobe of liver. From the time dx'd to the time removed it doubled in size. Fear was of rupturing. I have a large incision from right side of bellybutton almost to right shoulder blade. Have not had any problems since, it has been 13 months since surgery. Performed by Hazim Safi, M.D. at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. If you have any questions or coÜts you can email me at msanc@mailexcite.com.

adsales@up.net My wifes Dr. Opted not to opperate. Should she be drinking Beer (4 to 5 cans per night 7 days a week? sometimes as many as 8 to 10 cans. Is there a risk of this affecting the liver?

Hello...My daughter, age 19, was dx'ed at age 18 with two FNH's. The drs. here in Maine and in Boston have opted not to remove them. She has been sick since before dx. Still have not found cause of illness. Am concerned for her. Drs. have said she should not have children or take estrogen due to FNH. She is to have ultrasound each 6 months. Any ideas or comments greatly appreciated. Rita-- funnigal42@excite.com

jetback@hotmail.com Hi my name is Stacy, I have been searching for information on FNH, the things I have found have been contradictory. Does birth control contribute to FNH or not. I am 21 and have known about my FNH for 4 years. I was told to stop taking the pill, but when I went back on the pill the mass doubled in size. Is it because of the pill?

Comment 010

I am 43 yr old woman, many FNH tumors in 2/3rds of my liver. Took b.c. pills for many yrs. Just stopped. No surgery recommended. How often and do they do the special MRI's for the follow-up? please post info here.

continued from Comment 10; my Drs. rec. another MRI Ferredex (ferredex is special dye for liver) in 4 months.

cathyevans@roadrunner.nf.net Hi I have been told i have a fnh that can not be removed because of it central location. I have a lot of pain most all of the time. i would really like to hear from anyone who knows anything about fnh. thank you/

Comment 013

I am 34 years old.I had 3 adenomas removed by LITT (laser) 18 months ago in Germany. I was told at the time that it was probably caused by the contreceptive pill. On recently returning for yet another MRI it was discovered that I now have more. As I have not taken the pill now for over 2 years I was wondering if you could shed some light as to what is causing these. I now know the cure but not the cause. taylorobert@viabcp.com

Comment 014

I recently had sugery for reflux and while this was being perofrmed the surgeon stumbled upon a large mass on my liver which after a biopsy showed to be FNH. This would eplain the pain I have had in my right side. My tumor is quite large and I swell up and have gained pain. I wonder if the weight gain can be from the liver not performing as it should? I want this tumor removed so that maybe I will feel better and not be in pain?

Comment 015

At 28, and 10 years on birth control, I was diagnosed with FNH 4 years ago due to nagging, sharp at times, pain in right side and vomitting and nausea. FNH was 5 cm. Due to pain Dr. Iwatsuki at Univ. Pittsburgh resected right hepatic lobe, and discovered an additional 2 tumors, which he excised. 4 years later after having my 1st child I am experiencing similar symptoms. I would like to know if these damn things can reoccur.

abc22@earthlink.net

In any event I am awaiting my most recent CT results.

08/23/01, today was finally diagnosed with FHN lesion. I had originally consulted my GI specialist for pain in my upper quadrant in stomach and began a series of test with the conclusion of clear on all organs but, incidental mass in my upper lobe of my liver. The referral liver surgeon's final discussion was to follow-up with an MRI every 6 months to re-evauluate. I was clearly baffled how long it takes to determine the difference between an FHN and an adenoma. I was also told by my physician that the pain I was feeling was not from the FHN. vicky1087@hotmail.com 34 yr old - female

Geraldine F email freddo123@froggy.com.au 3-12-01 Was diagnosed with 3 masses small one in the parenchymal substance larger mass appears adjacent to the IVC near the confluence of the hepatic veins. The other large mass is in the posterior left lobe of liver one of these adjacent to the right kidney but within the liver substance-"almost certainly represent metastatic metastases" Had advanced malignant melanoma removed 21 years ago hence misdiagnosis. Focal nodular hyperplasia diagnosed 4 days ago I know nothing about this and can't eat easily. The liver biopsies 8 on 2 occasions were close to the osophegus they are painful there has also been another 1? found. I bled profusely on both biopsies they said no more biopsies because of the risks come back in 3 months. Will I be able to eat by then will I have a bleed? Why don't doctors tell us more? Are the other lesions FNH? I am a public patient and have had the best treatment but no MRI. The Dr said there is no scar visible in the centre of these lesions. Can anyone suggest anything besides meditation?

6-8-02 I am a 31 yo. white female, was diagnosed with FNH about 5 years ago by Mayo clinic lab from a biopsy that was obtained during gallbladder removal surgery (not at Mayo). I think it was about 2.5cm. Was advised it was ok to keep as long as it didn't cause me pain/problems. I had used combination birth control pills for about 10 years prior, and the mini-pill for several months just before this discovery. I was told to avoid hormonal birth control from now on but I was not advised to avoid pregnancy (as I've just read some women are advised) - I have had two more children, for a total of three, since that time- and *now* I read that this is not recommended!? I was also never told any information about follow-up- ultrasound or MRI periodically, etc. Wonder what the standard is there? I did ask my OB to play "find the tumor" during a routine OB ultrasound, but she couldn't find it - we didn't know if it shrunk after quitting the Pill or if it was simply not visible b/c of my liver being pushed up/cramped due to the pregnant state. Also, it wasn't visible by CT scan at the time of diagnosis- so I don't know if it wouldn't be visible anyway. Fortunately, I don't think I've ever had any pain related to it - I am curious about more detailed descriptions of the pain, however; I am hearing upper right abdomen (where the liver is) but that's it... is it dull, sharp, all the time, occasional, related to anything such as eating, drinking, activity, etc? Also, another GYN later told me that I *could* use hormonal b/c's, that there is no link - I now read that the link between this relationship is unsure in the medical world, but looking at this list there sure seems to be anecdotal evidence! I wonder what the specialists in FNH usually recommend? Frustrating that there seems to be LOTS of conflicting information and advice floating around.

I have been diagnosed with FocalNodularHyp for the last 2 years and I have seen 3 seperate Dr. I am young 21 years old. I have had this hard knot since I was in Junior High never thought any different until it became so big I could not ignore it. It recently has grown a tremendous size since my last testing. I have different symptoms and cannot tell whether it is FNH but I am frieghtened. Each Dr. has given several answers wait and see if it grows, have it biopsied, have it removed. The list goes on. I am not sure what to do but I am in and out of comfort. To those who have FNH what symptoms are you having? Please email me some comments myjasy@yahoo.com

Hi, we have a 43 yr old male friend living in Upstate NY who was finally diagnosed with FNH, after having been misdiagnosed with liver cancer. We are grateful for this diagnosis, however, there doesn't seem to be much info available as far as treatment, prognosis and dealing with pain. Unfortunately, he does not have a computer, but I will copy the comments for him. By the way, he does have continuous pain, which is puncuated by sharp pain. At the moment, it sounds as though the doctors will simply monitor the growths, but may not attempt any surgery. What is this thing and what causes it? Clearly, we can't blame this on birth control pills. Please comment and he will try to get use of a computer and email any of you who might have additional insight/experience.

I have an incidentally-discovered 4.5 cm FNH. I never knew it was there, and never had any pain. It is currently being monitored every 3 years, and has stayed the same for the past 2 years since discovery. There is debate as to the impact of estrogen on FNH, but I know I personally cannot tolerate estrogen (depression, sleeplessness etc. when on pill briefly in past) and am even now realizing I may have more estrogen in my natural hormonal balance in general due to increasingly painful/intense menses as I approach 40 years of age. This may explain why the pill is not tolerated by me, and may explain the formation of the FNH originally. I think many women are estrogen dominant, and then sadly take more with contraception or HRT, plus it is in our foods via pesticides. Men also produce estrogen, and even they can have an imbalance due to genetic/outside factors. I hope to see studies on this correlation in the future. I hope to start progesterone therapy soon, and will be curious if it helps or if my FNH is affected at all (have heard of some that can disappear). I would suggest to anyone not certain of the connection between estrogen and FNH to be safer than sorry and avoid the pill or HRT altogether. I even avoid soy products, as they mimic estrogen. My take on the FNH info out there seems that a solitary FHN may be caused by hormone excess, and multiple liver tumors is a sign of possible other situations. Hope this helps someone. I suggest NO surgery (or even biopsy) unless the FNH is huge and in danger or hemmorhage. FNH can be diagnosed well with an MRI and liver-spleen scan.
