I had gall bladder removed 18 months ago. Increased R upper quadrant pain followed--but it is infrequent--2-4 "attacks" per month, severe, sweating, double over, and last only max. 15-20 minutes. No pattern of relationship to food, sleep, etc. Elevated liver enzymes are reported, but are inconsistent. I was told that I have a hepatic hemangioma--but of no concern--benign-a defect from birth. Where can I get informaÑ ? E-mail LPiurowski@snet.net.

Recent MRI tests showed 10 cavernous hemangiomas on five lumbar vertebrae as well as in the hip joints. I have been suffering from constant back pain for quite some time; also have a history of endometriosis and massive pelvic adhesions due to peritonitis approx. 12 years ago. I am supposed to be scheduled for a complete bone scan and was wondering what this might show above and beyond the MRIs. My orthopedic surgeon teñ me my condition is inoperable; any thoughts? kareno@azlink.com

In early 1998 my mother had a tumor removed that was the size of a grapefruit. Since then they haven't given her long to live. We are stumped to find some kind of alternative medical treatment. In the past month they have found new sites of cancer in her hips lower back bone, shoulders, and at the base of her skull. We are desprate to hear of any new treatments other than the radiation and the chemotherapy.

My son, 27 years of age, was diagnosed at 8 years of age as having an hepatic angioma tumor of the liver, approx grapefruit size. 1/4 "in" the liver, 3/4 descending down from the liver. We were told it was inoperable because the major artery to his lower extremities is directly connected to and flowing through this thing. We have lived in constant dread that he might suffer a blow to his torso causing this to rupture. Weô ld appreciate any information on the subject. Lindaalb@awwwsome.com

Rib44@aol.com I am a 42 year old female who was told that I have a 2.9cm lesion in my liver, that half my liver looked normal and other half with fatty infiltration. Took CAT scan, ultra sound, dynamic MRI and than a red tagged blood cell test--all in that order. Red tagged blood cell test confirmed that it is hepatic hermangioma. I was told the last test is 99.9% accurate. Would like to know what causes hepatic hermaJ ma--weight gain? What is the treatment? Does it need to be removed--by medication or surgery? Can it become malignant? PLEASE RESPOND to Rib44@aol.com

I am 37 years old, suffer from systemis lupus and am under treatment with oral cytoxan 1500mg every 17 days for lupus nephritis. Began to have discomfort under my right rib cage and had an ultrasound done revealing a 2.1cm hyperechoic area consistant with hemangioma. My questions are (1) can chemotherapy cause this? (2) do hemangiomas ever go away? (3) what are the various treatments?

I have been told that I have a hemangioma located on my vertebrea at L-3. The doctor says it's in a very strange location. He doesn't believe that hemagiomas can cause symptoms. However, I've been having severe back pain and the back of both of my thighs are completely numb and my legs are very weak. Could the hemangioma be causing these problems? Also, is it possible for the hemangioma to rupture? If so, is it dangerouÕ Please email me at Chem Lover@aol.com

When he opened her he said it looke like a can of worms...there are multiple hemngiomas in and aroung her spleen down into the femerol ring. I can't find anyone who knows anything about them.{ the Doctors I have found look in books and shake their heads. Their treatment is..watch her. As she has gotten older, she is experiencing more pain and swelling. Any information would be appreciated

Name: Joan email: joandanrich@ameritech.net I am a 56 year old woman, recently diagnosed with a 18 cm liver hemangioma. I had my gallbladder removed two months ago. My liver specialist said he usually removes these but I am not having any pain since my surgery. I have decided against surgery and will have CT scans done every six months. I'm taking hormones and wonder if they should be discontinued as I read they can cÓ the hemangioma to increase. My doctor says the hemangioma doesn't interfere with liver function. How can that be when it covers so much of my right liver lobe? I've not heard of anyone with tumor this big. Why have the surgery if you don't have symptoms that you want desperately to end?

My father was diagnosed with a hermangioma located at the L-5 vertabrae. It has been determine that this was the cause of his siatic like pain he is experiencing in his lower back and legs. Doctors want to go through the groin area and cut off the blood supply to this tumor to stop it from growing. Then they want to shrink it with radiation and once it is small enough they will fill the area once occupied by this tumor wiÒ ement to fill the void. However, they are first trying to determine if the hermangioma is supplying blood to the spinal cord. Does anyone know about a book that contains informaiton on this? Does anyone know of a good neurosurgeon located in the NY Metro area? Thank you. cmg@spallp.com

I'm 37 year old male with a large cavernous hermangioma on my left upper lip. Currently, it's about 6.3cm (2-1/2") x 3.8cm (1-1/2") in size and very swollen. If fact, it "baloons" about an 3.2cm (1-1/4") away from my face. It produces a very pulsing pain. Also, my gums are turning very dark in color. It seems that much stress and lack of sleep increases the blood storage, but when firm pressure is applied, it semi-restricts the flow of blood and will give me some temporary relief. Will this cause another problem on other parts of my face?
I was originally diagnosed with this condition in 1981. It first manifested itself about the size and color (red pigmentation) of a standard pencil eraser. At that time I experienced no pain. At that time it was only a cosmetic condition. When it increased to the size of a dime, it was treated by surgical removal along with about 30% of my upper lip.
What kind of "state of the art" treatment can be recommended? I'm wondering about cryo and laser therapies. I'm told that surgeons may have to go through my heart to find the "feeder" vein. To do this they cannot give me any anethesia. Isn't there some kind of machine that can detect all of the veins in ones body, e.g., my cheek and neck? I would appreciate it very much if someone would contact me ASAP, as I must undergo removal very soon. Thank you in advance for any info. you send me.

At age 37 due to cancer in my office, I asked to have this is checked. Here I now sit with a 9cm by 14cm hemangioma, 2x3cm 11 years ago. I have had two children in 92 and 93 very close together. Some research I've done says maybe it enlarges during pregnancy. I'd like feedback if anyone has any. I truly do not want to go through that surgery. I sit here with no pain, just frustration. I have a 4.3 cm posterior right hepatic hemangioma. I have been disbled with severe upper abdominal pain for two years. MY HMO doctor refuses to believe the hemangioma might be causing the pain. I spend most of my time in bed. Any movemnt and bending in the waist area increases the pain. I have had nausea and vomiting for over a year. I have sharp stabbing pain in the area of the liver and a constant grinding pain in teh right abdomen. Pressing in the right upper area causes sharp pain during examination. I am in so much pain that I am unable to function normally. The pain meds they give me are not effective. Is there any doctor out there who would operate on me. Is there anyone with information. I have experience right middle back pain for 6 mos and worried about what that could be. I am told by Doctor is a pulled muscle. I don't think so. Ultrasound revealed spot on liver, MRI found atypical hemangioma. AFP tumor tracer negative. Is this possible cancer? The doctor mentioned possible connection with smoking and birth control pills... Does anyone know what I should expect to be told next? Cancer? Surgery? Write to Karen-Sandy@juno.com Thanks!

My sister is 46 yrs old and has been dx with Haemangioma Cavernous Hepatic tumor on her liver. She was on hormomes and was told to stop taking them since this could be causing it to grow faster. She has since been given a hormone patch to wear since it would not be the same as taking a pill. She suffers from a lot of pain on her liver and is often holding that area with her hand. The doctor is still testing her frequently but also searching to see what can be done. He told her it is a birth defect that affects 3% of the population and the pain is from the tumor. drrider@scattercreek.com
