The resolution of the CT scan was low and this made it hard to characterize the lesion.

Approx. 25 pathologists from Colo. to Mich. studied my 8 yr. old daughter's biopsy, prompted by perished bone (1/4 moon shaped from top of lower right jaw, "down") and 5 perished teeth (3 baby, 2 un-erupted adult) and and a 3 cm. lesion or growth. Growth is osteoblast enriched & a dozen other "tech" terms. Only one renowned pathologist in Chicago, diagnosed "suggestive" Chronic Sclerosing Osteo- myelitis. Denver Path.ylso found no classic osteosarcoma features. Several Pathologists in Denver suggest possible "unusual juvenile active ossifying firoma". Oral Surgeon initially stated he removed all the expanded bone & tissue but immediately after swelling from surgery subsided, the "growth" is still present & obvious. She took antibiotics for 10 days following surgery, but "my" medical journal suggests 6 weeks of antibiotics for chronic osteomyelitis. Today: Pediatrician took blood tests, suggests bone scan if blood shows problematic signs. Pediatrician also examined daughter for occasional "severe" leg pain in Jan. prior to the Jaw problem. Pain seems to be "not" in the joints. Leg pain related to jaw destruction? I'm scared. 5 teeth re- moved, hole in her jawbone, large growth only half removed, then sent home to "watch" for either regeneration, or further degeneration. Any help for a teary eyed weary dad & angel child? paul@bbs.macatawa.com THANK YOU!

I just wanted to note that the radiographs did not reproduce well on the computer. There is software available to improve the contrast of the jpg or gif scanned image file without significantly distorting the image. I do however appreciate the time and effort it took to display this case on the internet, and I certainly must say thank you. I hope that you continue to present cases to the world at large for oudntinuing efforts to keep up in medicine as well as for the clients to see that medicine is far from differences in interpretation of data and opinion. Farewell. Don

They are giving him four treatments of chemo and then in the middle or end of February, he will have the tumor removed and it will be replaced with a donor bone. He wasn't given any chemotherapy at the time. In 1996, he was diagnosed with cancer again, this time it had spread to his lung. At this point, he was given chemotherapy to treat the cancer. However, now, a year later the cancer has recurred in his lung. If y ave any information that can help us help him please contact me at may325@concentric.net

First, I underwent surgery for the removal of the tumor along with a failed reconstruction of the palate, zygoma, and occipital bones. I'm in my third week of chemotheraphy; I'm receiving a combination of high dose methotrexate, ifosfamide and adriamycin. I have refused to take cisplatin because of the potentially permanent si‡ffect of hearing loss. I'm interested in hearing from other people with osteosarcoma in the jaws or head region. Hi, my name is Casey Johnson and I am from Nekoosa, WI.(by Wis. Rapids) I was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in May of 1995. The cancer was in the fibula in my right leg. I was fortunate to catch it at a early stage. The doctor was able to save most of my knee. I went through 6 chemo treatments before the surgery(Aug. 1995), and 12 after the surgery. The doctor in Marshfield(Saint Joseph's hospital) removedĚ inches of my fibula and replaced it with my tibia from my left leg along with cadaver chips, and a 10 in metal plate and 12 screws. The main reason I am making a comment is because something really scary is happening in the town of Nekoosa. 3 others since I was diagnosed have also been diagnosed with this horrible disease. I was 15 and got diagnosed in may of 1995, Brandon Naylor was 24 and was diagnosed in september of 1995, Erin Bindel was 17 and diagnosed in September of 1997, and finally Stacey Sainsbury who is 15 wa just diagnosed november of 1997. I also heard that 3 others were diagnosed recently. I don't know if that is a fact. I think something is definately wrong in this small town. We are surrounded by two paper mills and two chemical plants, and I think they play a major role in the diagnosesof this horrible disease. Please E-Mail me at rrjohn@wctc.net if you hear anything about this, or just if you have any comments. Or you can write to me at 1670 Springhill Ln. Port Edwards, WI 54469

Hello, My name is William; I'm from Welch West Virginia. About 4 months ago I had a friend that was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the distal area of the R. Femur. There was some trauma to that area from playing softball. For the last 2 to 3 months he's been recieving chemotherapy at Ruby Memoral Hospital in Morgantown WV. They have now sent him to somewhere in Pittsburg and whoever he seen up there wants to do surgery to ěrt a steel rod through the bone, which will prevent all flexion of the knee joint. Is this a common treatment and if so are there any other specialists that are highly recommended with expertice in this class of cancer. Prompt response would greatly be appreciated. Thank you: William Kibbey. Kibbey21@mailexcite.com

I am friends with the parents of a 7 1/2 yr. old boy who today received the devastating diagnosis of osteosarcoma. My knowledge of his case is limited except that it is in his femur just above the knee. He has apparently had no symptoms other than leg pain off and on (growing pains?) over the last 2-3 weeks. His parents took him to the hospital last evening as the pain failed to subside and began to cause problems walking&e won't know for the next couple of days the results of tests (MRI, etc.) and therefore don't know if this has spread. The parents (like myself) are new to the Denver, CO area and don't know quite where to turn. For starters, does anyone know anything about the reputation of the pediatric oncology dept. at the Denver Children's Hospital? Also where are the best places to learn about the most current treatment available? Lastly as all of you in this board have been or are going thru the same situation, what advice or direction can you offer these devastated parents. As they are spending their time in the hospital with their son, I am exploring the internet on their behalf. Any reponses to me will be greatly appreciated and immediately forwarded to the family. Thank you in advance. I can be reached by email at JMarki@aol.com or by phone during the day at 303-645-8761.

My daughter is a 28 year old single school teacher who is engaged to marry this coming June. Approximately 2 months ago, she experienced pain and swelling to her left fibula. It was thought to possible be a sarcoma. Her mri was not very hopeful. She is scheduled for an open biopsy Monday. I'm afraid for her. I wanted the surgeon to first perform a cut-neddle biopy to decrease the risk of seeding malignant cells in case the mass is malignant, but this is not the procedure he follows. Can anyone give me any insights on this procedure, also, would it be more beneficial for her to be seen at M>D> Anderson Cancer center instead of our local surgeon? Would appreciate any information or comments that may help. Thank You. My address is jksf@eatel.net.

My sister Elaine was diagnosed with an osteo-sarcoma in her right knee.We were told that she'd need chemo first and then a knee replacement. The chemo was intense and she had really bad reactions to it, in particular metotrexate, which they stopped early on in the treatment. She couldn't have the full course but they gave her what they could, or, what she could take. Most people loose their hair and get violently sick, Elaine got really bad and suffered a lot! They subsequenlty removed her knee and replaced it successfully and she had to do the same ammount of chemo as before after the op'! She had the same bad reaction to the chemo as before and towards the end of it, we were very worried, my mum had said to the doctors that there was somehting wrong, as a mum maybe she had some foresight into something nobody could pick up on and she developed colitis. The last dose of chemo almost killed her! her large bowell died and she had major organ failure. They had to remove her large bowell while her blood wasn't clotting and they prepared us for the worst. Elaine made it through with flying colours after almost six weeks of intensive care! She is a walking miracle but after a seizure last Friday, thay found four tumours in her right lung. Elaine is due for surgery next week to remove them and she is petrified as you can imagine!Things are looking good as far as the doc's are concerned, which is a great help and we are all very positive at the moment! Has anyone out there had a similar experience? I know this type of reaction is rare but it would help us if we knew of anyone who's been through similar! Elaine is in Dublin Ireland I live in Middlesex England, I love her to bits ,can anyone help? Please???? Jackie Peck Home-0208 427 8071 " " Mobile-07956 257 526 " " jackiepeck@msn.com

karing @hotmail.com My son, now 21, had osteo sarcoma in 2001 and had part of tibia, knee and part of femur replaced. He also had several tumors in both lungs, they too had been removed and he received 32weeks of chemo, with the last one in April 2002. Things were fine until last week when he had chest pain and trouble breathing. We found out the he in fact has another mass about 3.6cm in left lung, surgery is scheduled for July 22 to remove left lung lope. Is more chemo an option? and what are the survival chances? If you have any experience or sugestions for alternatives please let me know. Worried in VA.
